Bethpage Black
Major-championship public parkland
Bethpage Black is the headline and the filter. If your group cannot handle the walk, the rough, the pace, and the possibility of shooting 92 with dignity, do not force it. If your group can handle it, this is one of the great public-golf days in America.

Best for
Strong players, bucket-list public golf, groups that can handle a physical walk
Watch out

Not even sure where to begin with the superlatives! Staff is their greatest asset, the starters I met were so nice and welcoming and informative, Sam behind the bar was so nice and friendly, the greenskeepers are obviously the best at what they do as witnessed by how immaculate e

This is the absolute best golf course I have ever played. The cours is incredibly challenging, but fair. Only one or two holes don't have a forced carry onto the green. The price to play for a NY resident is amazingly low, for an out-of-stater it's expensive, but good for a once

Other courses in the same trip.

Must play
Bethpage Red
Red is not the consolation prize.
Strong play
Bethpage Blue
Blue is the practical third Bethpage course.

Strong play
Bethpage Green
Green is useful, not essential.

Strong play
Bethpage Yellow
Yellow is the safety valve.

Strong play
Pound Ridge Golf Club
Pound Ridge is the right Westchester splurge if the group cares about architecture.

Strong play
Bally's Golf Links at Ferry Point
Ferry Point is a very New York golf product: dramatic, expensive, slightly overhyped, and still worth playing once if the skyline matters
Strong play
Montauk Downs State Park
Montauk Downs is excellent in the right trip and annoying in the wrong one.

Strong play
Hudson Hills Golf Course
Hudson Hills is the grown-up depth play.
